Launch of Littler’s Seventh Annual European Employer Survey

Published: 15 October 2024

Littler's annual European employer conference took place in Amsterdam last week. Employers from many countries participated, receiving an insightful examination of the most significant legal developments and trends impacting European workplaces.

In this context, we are excited to share the results of Littler's seventh annual European Employer Survey.

Completed by nearly 630 HR executives, business leaders, and in-house lawyers this year’s survey examines how European employers are responding to a number of hot-button issues, from election outcomes and AI adoption in the workplace to heightened pressure on ESG initiatives and emerging compliance challenges. Key findings include:

  • Political Issues Are Top-of-Mind: As much of Europe heads to the ballot box in 2024, 86% of respondents say they are facing at least some degree of difficulty managing politics in the workplace. Additionally, 83% are concerned about employment law changes stemming from 2024 or 2025 elections across Europe.
  • AI Adoption Creates New Challenges: The use of AI in HR has grown across European workplaces over the last year, as most respondents (72%) now say their organisations are using either generative or predictive AI in at least one HR function. At the same time, only 53% are confident that employees are not improperly using AI tools at work and just 29% have policies in place guiding employee use.
  • ESG Issues Hold Centre Stage: Most executives (79%) say their organisations have increased their focus on ESG initiatives over the past 12 months. Climate risk is a particular concern, with 76% placing greater focus on sustainability over the same timeframe. The survey report explores several additional changes impacting the workplace. For instance, 87% of executives are at least somewhat prepared to comply with the EU Pay Transparency Directive, while 73% have seen a rise in mental health accommodation requests from employees over the past year.
