The coronavirus - preventive routines and measures in the workplace
Lately, several companies have come to us with questions related to the corona virus. As an employer, you should introduce preventative routines in connection with the coronavirus outbreak.
In line with the requirements of the Working Environment Act for a proper working environment, we recommend employers to carry out a risk assessment of infection risk at the workplace and to initiate infection prevention measures. Employers should also follow the health authorities' recommendations and act accordingly.
Relevant measures may include stricter procedures for cough and hand hygiene, demands that employees work from home, restrictions on travel and layoffs. By virtue of the employer's right of management, the company may require employees to follow measures that are factual and proportionate.
Asking employees to work from home may be appropriate to prevent an already infected person from spreading the virus further. Home office can also be considered for employees who have travelled to areas with outbreaks of infection, but who have not been proven infected.
When it comes to work-related journeys, the employer should consider whether the journey should be completed. For private journeys, we recommend that employees follow the travel advice given by the Norwegian authorities.
Layoffs may be a relevant measure in case of failure to deliver from suppliers or other practical barriers.
